3 Day Workshop. Exploring touch, tone, time, creativity and transformation through the art of gong playing.
This three-day immersion offers a comprehensive study of gong technique, tone, rhythm, and awareness. Participants will refine their sound, develop coordination and hand independence, develop their sonic language and deepen listening.
Over our time together, we’ll explore:
Focus Areas Include:
• Mallet Work & Grip: Pivot grip, movement, and mallet control for precision and expression.
• Strokes & Techniques: Drone, toning, and two-handed strokes; muting, dampening, and hand independence.
• Tone & Dynamics: Sculpting sound, working with directions of change, and exploring dynamics.
• Rhythm & Time: Developing patterns, timing, and long-form rhythmic endurance.
• Listening & Ensemble Work: Attuning to overtones, space, and group interaction.
• Overtones & Friction: Exploring continuous tones, harmonic layers, and textural soundscapes.
• Creativity, Composition & Improvisation: Exploring touch, tone, and transformation as a springboard for original composition — building original pieces and spontaneous soundscapes from technique, structuring improvisation, and developing personal motifs into full compositions.
Gong Explorations provides a strong foundation in the language of the gong — cultivating technique, control, and musical awareness through deep listening and hands-on exploration. During this workshop there will be lots of small group dynamics- working in teams and exploring exercises together to learn in a dynamic flow from each other.
